Retired Superintendent James T. Wainwright Passes Away

In sadness we advise the passing of Retired Superintendent James T. (Cobby) Wainwright on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 following an extended illness.

Mr. Wainwright retired from the Department of Corrections/New River Correctional Institution in December 1988 with 30 years of service. He began his career in 1958 at Florida State Prison as a Maintenance Foreman then promoted to Maintenance Superintendent.

In 1973 he transferred to Lawtey Community Center as the Correctional Chief Counselor. Upon that facility being changed to Lawtey Correctional Institution in 1976 he promoted to Assistant Superintendent then in 1977 promoted to Superintendent. In 1985 he was promoted to Superintendent II at the Reception and Medical Center.

In 1987 he transferred to New River Correctional Institution. He was devoted to his family, a respected member of the Bradford County Community as well as serving on the Bradford County School Board for several years.

Mr. Wainwright was the brother of retired Department of Corrections Secretary Louie L. Wainwright.
