Corrections Foundation Ready to Assist FDC Officers and Staff after Irma Passes https://www.correctionsfoundation.org/2017/09/corrections-foundation-ready-to-assist-fdc-officers-and-staff-after-irma-passes/ Fri, 08 Sep 2017 14:28:08 +0000 https://www.correctionsfoundation.org/?p=6787 Donate to Support FDC Officers and Staff

The Corrections Foundation stands by ready to assist Florida Department of Corrections’ officers and staff after Hurricane Irma passes.

If you are affected by Hurricane Irma, please notify your warden, circuit administrator, or appropriate supervisor to put an Employee Assistance Request in.

These institutions and offices will, as soon as they feasibly can, collect all requests and send them to our office for processing.

We will focus our assistance on those who suffer catastrophic losses and major damage to homes and primary vehicles. In addition, we will provide assistance to non-members at the same level as members.

While our offices are closed Friday, September 8 and Monday, September 11, we will reopen when state offices in Leon County re-open. Our first order of business is to prepare emergency assistance checks for affected employees. We will send these checks via FedEx to institutions and circuit offices for distribution to employees affected.

For offices in and around Leon County, Corrections Foundation staff have offered to deliver checks to offices or meet designated staff at a half-way point, where time and safety allow.

We certainly hope and pray that all are safe and that there is little damage, but we want you to know we stand by ready to assist you as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Property Insurance Information https://www.correctionsfoundation.org/2017/09/property-insurance-information/ Thu, 07 Sep 2017 11:26:42 +0000 https://www.correctionsfoundation.org/?p=6773 The Corrections Foundation stands ready to help Florida Department of Corrections’ officers and staff with emergencies and other challenges, particularly as Hurricane Irma is headed to our state.

Many of you may experience difficulty in managing your property insurance deductible. We are recommending that you look at the front page of your property insurance policy where a category is listed as Coverage A (or the category could be labeled as “Dwelling”) with a dollar amount indicated.

This dollar amount is the maximum limit your insurance company will pay in the event your home suffers catastrophic damage (or a complete loss) to your home, less your deductible. Your deductible in most cases in a hurricane is 2 percent of COVERAGE A.

Many often think the deductible is a percentage of the claim amount. That is not the case.

To calculate your deductible if you need to make a claim to your property insurance company, multiply 2% times the dollar amount in the category that shows an “A” or “dwelling.” In the attached, notice that the dwelling amount $157,400 and the 2% deductible amount is $3148.

If you have questions, please call the Department of Financial Services consumer helpline at 1-877-693-5236.

Many of you may not know the additional services we provide, including serving as a fiduciary for donations that allow us to buy needed items for FDC, including vehicles, GPS collars, computers, and …dogs.

We most recently purchased a new K9 – Alf – for the Canine Interdiction Unit, who will assist in detecting contraband in facilities.

Here’s a brief video showing Alf in action and how the Corrections Foundation has helped FDC in the past.
