Agenda | Registration Form | Promotional Flyer

The Corrections Foundation along with the Dept of Corrections Office of Education and Gulf Correctional Institution is hosting the 1st Dog Program Summit on September 9th at Gulf Correctional Institution and Forestry Camp. Come share what your DC dog program is doing and learn from other programs in the Region. The dog obedience programs from Region I, institutional program staff, shelter/humane society program staff and volunteers, warden’s, assistant wardens, classification staff and others interested are invited to join us. We ask that you register by August 22nd so that we can compile a list of attendees for Gulf CI, prepare for lunch and any needed security clearances can be obtained.

We will begin the day at the Gulf CI Forestry camp where we will see a demonstration by the inmate trainers and a class of dogs in the DAWGS program that are almost ready for adoption. Then we will go to the Administration Training Building for lunch and the remainder of the training that is set to include speakers from Gulf CI DAWGS program, a highlight or best practice from each dog program represented and a training on Dog First Aid by Jay King. See attached agenda.

We ask that each program come prepared with a 5 minute presentation to share one practice that has been successful and we ask that you provide a hand out to participants regarding your program and the successful practice you share. Please send your handout to me and I will make copies for attendees – Logue.sheri@mail.dc.state.fl.us

This is a free event and lunch will be served, so please RSVP soon and no later than August 22nd. We are looking forward to this “think tank” event and hope you will make plans to join us.

Feel free to share the attached flyer and registration form with those who may be interested in attending, especially those directly involved in your program, and let me know their email address so I can add them to the invitation email list.

Message from Sec. Crews:

Please join me in recognizing Community Corrections members during Probation, Parole, and Community Supervision Week July 13 – 19, 2014.  Community Corrections members promote public safety by providing effective supervision of offenders in the community, holding offenders accountable and connecting offenders to services in order to reduce victimization and the reoccurrence of crime.   State Probation Officers play a critical role in our criminal justice system.  They serve in many capacities on the front lines, handling heavy case loads and ensuring that sanctions are followed.  Their work is challenging and often dangerous, working in high crime areas. This distinguished group of professionals dedication and commitment to public service is demonstrated on a daily basis, yet often goes unrecognized.  I speak for the entire Executive Leadership Team when I say how proud we are to celebrate the contributions each of you make in advancing our Agency’s mission and to thank you for the job you do.

We have faced some great challenges this past year but because of your hard work and dedication, we have also experienced many accomplishments. Through your initiative and hard work, 90% of the offenders who successfully complete supervision will not return to the Department for supervision or incarceration within three (3) years – a very impressive long term result. Your commitment to research-based supervision models and focus on changing offender behavior to improve supervision success rates and reduce future victimization and crime is truly commendable.  The partnerships you maintain with local law enforcement to share intelligence, assist with arrests, conduct searches and planned compliance initiatives enhances public safety.  The rapport you continue to foster with the judiciary, court personnel, Florida Parole Commission, criminal justice, state and county agencies, victims, local community resources and citizens enhances the professional image of the Department.   These accomplishments are not a result of any one person – whether you are one of the 2,100 certified staff who puts your life on the line every day to ensure public safety or one the 600 additional members who directly and indirectly help Community Corrections function on a daily basis – we celebrate our successes because of the efforts of each and every one of you.

Governor Scott has signed the attached proclamation showing his support of Probation, Parole, and Community Supervision Week and probation offices statewide will be hosting events to celebrate throughout the week.   You are truly “The Change in Your Community”.

Again, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your hard work and dedication.  Probation, Parole, and Community Supervision Week is about each of you and I hope you are as proud to be a part of this Department as I am and to be among the dedicated DOC professionals working to move this Agency forward every day.  I am honored for the opportunity to serve as your Secretary.

Michael D. Crews
