FLAGS FOR FREEDOM

Established in April of 2003, the Flags for Freedom Program raises money to recognize and benefit DC employees who are serving in the armed forces.

More than 550 department employees are on standby or have been deployed to defend freedom in our country and around the world. Currently 93 are on active duty.

We recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of military personnel as they protect freedom in the US and abroad.

DC employees have donated $66,723 in support and recognition of our DC troops and their families.

In 2004 and 2005, phone cards were sent to the families of all DC employees for Thanksgiving and Christmas on active duty so families could speak with their loved ones. In 2006 and 2007 VISA and Wal-Mart gift cards were sent to the families.

With the support of Secretary McNeil we are currently implementing a project to collect items for care packages to send to our DC troops overseas.

If you know the overseas address of a DC employee, please e-mail Sheila Logue.

Without getting into a lot of detail, I was recently diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer and ended up loosing an eye to it. With the grace of God, many prayers, a positive attitude and a strong support system both at home and at work, I’ve made it through the first hurdle with flying colors.

I have worked with the Department of Corrections for 20 years and previously with two other State agencies and none can compare with the Department of Corrections and all that they do for its staff. I know that the Foundation is there for all DC employees and because of the good that the Foundation does for staff in times of need, I will continue to support the Foundation both financially and in spirit.
