Corrections Foundation License Plate in Danger of Being EndedThe specialty license plate for DC officers and staff has been formally placed on probation due to not selling 1,000 in a 12 month period, according to a letter from Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that was delivered to us on December 17. The Corrections Foundation has until October 31st, 2009 to sell 1,000. After one year and one month of availability, there are only 229 valid registrations – less than 1% of DC’s 27,000 employees. The purpose of the license plate was two-fold. The first is to promote the recognition of DC’s 27,000 officers and staff to that of other state and local law enforcement professionals. The board and staff of the Corrections Foundation felt it could play a role in promoting the interests of line officers and staff, particularly at a time when they were – and are – being targeted by the legislature for budget cuts. The second purpose is charitable. Since 1999, we’ve given $2.8 million to over 1,800 DC employees. Last fiscal year we assisted 390 DC employees and provided $437,500 during times of need. This year, half way through our fiscal year, we’ve provided $212,500 to 190 employees during their time of crisis. We’re able to provide this assistance within one to two business days of receiving the request. The license plate was to help bolster the revenue stream by diversifying the income, making more dollars available for emergencies. For example, a sale of 1,000 tags – a scant 3% of DC employees - would provide an additional $25,000 for employee assistance. That $25,000 is equal to assistance for 50 house fires, 16 medical emergencies or critical illnesses, or 50 emergency trips due to a parent’s or child’s critical illness or accident out-of-state. A sale of 2,000 tags would double those numbers. A sum of $50,000 would provide assistance for 100 house fires, 32 medical emergencies or critical illnesses, or 100 emergency trips. A sale of 5,000 tags for $125,000 would provide for 250 hour fires, 83 medical emergencies or critical illnesses, or 250 emergency trips out-of-state. Always remember the Corrections Foundation is your Foundation – exclusively for the officers and staff of the Department of Corrections. We always stand by ready to assist, just as we always have. And we’re as strong – or weak – as you allow us to be. |
At this time my husband and I would like to thank everyone at the Foundation for the prayers and monetary support that has been given us...each time I had a crisis in my family, my DOC family has been there for me. Melissa Duff, Data Entry Operator, Gainesville Work Camp/Classification |
