TALLAHASSEE -- The state's auditor general has given a green light for using a University of West Florida process to verify potential public support of five new specialty license tags, including a pair honoring the military and saluting stock-car racing.
Auditor General Bill Monroe's report does not mean that the license plates will be issued any time soon. But clearance can be a boost for consideration of the tags when the 2007 legislative session starts next month.
Monroe's report focused on five proposed tags, with messages saying "Support Our Troops," "NASCAR," "Protect Florida Springs," "Trees Are Cool" and "Corrections Foundation." State law and Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles rules require organizations seeking license plates to have independent surveys conducted, showing at least 30,000 motorists are ready to buy a particular tag.
The auditor said the department has a contract with UWF for statistical analysis of data submitted by survey organizations in support of new tags.
"Based on our audit, we determined that for the five proposed specialty license plates, the Department complied with the provisions of . . . Florida Statutes and relevant Department procedures related to the conduct and evaluation of the scientific sample surveys of Florida motor vehicle owners," Monroe reported.
The auditors interviewed DHSMV personnel, examined records and repeated some of the statistical analyses to test the process for measuring the potential market of the specialty tags. |
