The Corrections Foundation is kicking off the 2005 membership drive March 1. The month-long statewide campaign seeks to increase current membership of 12, 800 by 5000 new members.

"We are very excited about this year's drive, " said Foundation Director Evelyn Ploumis-Devick. It took a while for people to understand the purpose and mission of the Foundation, but after the last hurricane season, people began to understand in a big way that this foundation is about serving employees," she added. The Foundation has redesigned its logo and lapel pin to reflect the professionalism of the employees it serves.

"If you have to limit your charitable donations please remember, no other charitable contribution has such a direct affect on the person working next to you or on you and your family than membership in the Corrections Foundation," said Foundation supporter and Board of Directors member Louis L. Wainwright. "Show your support for one another by boosting membership in the Corrections Foundation."

"With over 24,000 employees the Foundation has the potential to be a tremendous force for good in the lives of its employees and the communities in which they serve," said former Secretary James V. Crosby Jr.

One of the ways that the Foundation supports employees is through the Employee Assistance Program. When tragedy occurs they are able to provide immediate financial assistance to our employees and members. Financial assistance is awarded when an employee lacks adequate insurance (life, health or home) or other financial resources to recover from a tragedy. Types of emergencies include: death, injury in an automobile or other accident, loss or injury due to a house fire, and medical expenses due to a serious injury for an employee, their spouse or one of their dependant children. The Employee Assistance Program is supported by employee membership in the Corrections Foundation. During the last fiscal year, the Foundation distributed $306,000 to DC employees in need.

FACTS ABOUT THE CORRECTIONS FOUNDATION

February 2005

The Corrections Foundation is the direct support organization to the Department of Corrections. The Foundation was authorized in 1996 by Florida Statute, as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, to support the personnel, programs, and services of the Department of Corrections.

Employee Assistance Program

One of the ways that the Foundation supports employees is through the Employee Assistance Program. When tragedy occurs the Foundation provides immediate financial assistance to our employees and members.

During the last fiscal year, the Foundation distributed $306,000 to 225 DC employees in need. Since the programs inception in 1999 more than $1,000,000 has been disbursed through the Employee Assistance Program.

Staff knowing of a fellow employee's need for emergency assistance can provide their Warden, Circuit Administrator or Central Office Director with a written request detailing the employees situation and request that they initiate a formal request to the Foundation.

Staff must be a member of the Corrections Foundation to receive consideration for maximum financial assistance. However, any DC employee who is in crisis and meets the current eligibility criteria can request one-time assistance of $500.

Corrections Foundation Membership

The Employee Assistance Program is supported by employee membership and special events. Employees of the Department can join the Foundation either through payroll deduction of $1 minimum bi-weekly or by annual membership of $26.00.

The Foundation currently has a total of 12,787 members among 26,014 DC employees. Of the 12,787 members, 9,088 are employed at institutions (43% of their employees), 2,254 are employed within community corrections (66% of their employees) and 1,009 are employed at Central Office or in the service centers (67% of their employees).

Members should be very proud of what their minimum donation of $1 a pay period is doing for fellow employees. Your membership allows the Foundation to make a difference in the lives of DC personnel throughout the state. The Foundation received cards and emails weekly thanking Corrections Foundation members and DC employees for the support given to them when they had no where else to turn. Members are to be commended for making this Foundation an organization to be proud of and one that staff knows they can turn to when they desperately need emergency financial assistance.

Benefits of Becoming a Member

  • First and foremost your membership allows you to help fellow DC employees through the Employee Assistance Program. As described in the email messages sent each month; someone in the department has experienced a tragedy in their life and turned to the Foundation for help. The Foundation is able to assist during these times of need because of increased membership. And, employees never know when it could be them or their family who needs the assistance.

  • It is a chance for non-uniformed employees to dress casual on selected Friday’s or other days as approved by former Secretary Crosby.

  • It is an opportunity to win $250 cash during our 2005 Membership Campaign, March 1-31 st.

  • Members will receive a lapel pin to show that they are a supporting member of the Foundation.

For more information regarding membership or the many programs supported by the Corrections Foundation, please visit our website at www.correctionsfoundation.org or contact the Foundation office at (850) 410-4305.

It is my opinion that each and every Correctional Officer should join the Foundation and help them to support all of those in need. Corrections should be a family and this is one way families help out. Remember, you never know what tomorrow holds.
