Bring books -- catch a ballgame
DAYTONA BEACH - Baseball fans attending Saturday's Daytona Cubs game can help children of prisoners hit the books.
The state Department of Corrections and the Daytona Cubs Minor League Baseball club are collecting donated children's books, coloring books and crayons.
The home game at 7 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark will be played against the Jupiter Hammerheads.
More than 40 percent of Florida inmates have children on their visiting lists, and the donated books will be delivered to state prisons for use by children who visit their parents in prison, according to corrections officials.
Nationally, nearly 2 million children have a parent in prison.
"Studies show that having a parent in prison is an enormously stressful experience that may impact children for many years," Corrections Secretary James R. McDonough said in a prepared statement. "We appreciate the Cubs for their commitment to helping these children and their families."
Brady Bullard, assistant general manager for the Cubs, said anyone giving donations will receive a coupon for a free snow cone.
Donations will be made through the Corrections Foundation, the nonprofit support organization for the Florida Department of Corrections.

I wanted to let you know I have been a recipient of the Corrections Foundation when I really was in a very bad medical & financial situation. I have nothing but good to say about the program & will tell anyone that is not a member why that need to be, so I thank you for what you have done for me & my family when I was in need & I am sure I speak for many others out there.
