Did you know that every day there are more than 27,000 corrections officers, probation officers and corrections staff hard at work to protect your community? Did you know that they have an organization dedicated to supporting them and striving to raise their level of recognition in the community?

When you think of your local law enforcement, you might forget about these loyal, hard-working officers, but they are very much a part of your community and responsible for public safety. The Corrections Foundation’s role is to support and serve them in their mission to protect our communities.

The Corrections Foundation has a specialty license plate dedicated to these corrections officers and staff. The cost of the tag is $25, and every cent you give to purchase the Corrections Foundation specialty license tag goes directly to the Corrections Foundation to assist DC officers and staff in life’s most difficult times, including critical illness, accidents, house fires and more.

Plans include creating a scholarship fund for the children of fallen officers; expanding the disaster relief fund to prepare to help staff after natural disasters like hurricanes; and expanding the Employee Assistance Program, which serves hundreds of DC employees each year.

Since 1999, the Corrections Foundation has provided over $3.2 million to over 2,500 DC officers and staff. Last year alone, $445,000 was provided to 414 DC employees. And in the last month, $45,500 was distributed to employees in need.

But you might not have the opportunity to support officers through the license plate much longer. After much investment by the Corrections Foundation in gaining support for the creation of this specialty license tag that benefits officers and staff, the plate will be discontinued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles if the 1,000-plate threshold is not achieved by Oct. 31, 2009.

Active registrations are currently at 350, and the foundation needs the community’s help to reach our goal of 1,000 license plates. We need your help!

We encourage your support to help ensure that this tag and the opportunities it represents are not lost.

Thank you for your support of those working tirelessly for our protection and safety.

It is my opinion that each and every Correctional Officer should join the Foundation and help them to support all of those in need. Corrections should be a family and this is one way families help out. Remember, you never know what tomorrow holds.
