CORRECTIONS FOUNDATION DONATES COMPUTERS TO MIDWAY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION

Deloris Lamb, president of the Eugene Lamb, Jr. Foundation, was instrumental in getting six computers for Midway’s Recreation Center, also named for Eugene Lamb, Jr., a Gadsden County commissioner. Mrs. Lamb, now retired from the Florida Department of Corrections, said she knew of the department’s Corrections Foundation through her 24 years of working there. “They help families of employees, and offer computers for Florida kids through programs.” The six computers donated by the Corrections Foundation will serve an as-yet unknown number of children at the recreation center.

“We know there are kids in the community who don’t have computers in their homes.  Others may have (computers) but this may provide a more conducive environment for studying.

Adult programs may come later,” said Lamb, who said the Lamb Foundation will work closely with the city to assist them in their needs for the computer programs. “We’re not trying to manage this day to day. That will fall under city operations. We won’t be operating the center, but will be assisting with enhancements at the center.”  Lamb said that the Lamb Foundation is tax-exempt so contributions and gifts to the foundation are tax deductible.  The Foundation will raise money to purchase a large-volume printer to work with the computers.

The City of Midway is already addressing security needs at the complex before the computers are accessible.  Initially, the computers will hold basic processing programs until community needs are identified.

“Investing in organizational activities (at the center) will draw people and children there. It will certainly provide an avenue to use their energy in a positive manner,” said Mrs. Lamb. “We truly appreciate those who have donated to this point. We’ll continue to work with the foundation to get the community to help with this.”

Lamb said the computers donated by the Department of Corrections’ “Computers for Kids” program were refurbished by inmates at the Cross City Institution, a couple of hours south of Midway and Tallahassee. Lamb said these computers will give the center a great start to see how big (Midway’s) need is and how much space there will be for expansion.

The Eugene Lamb, Jr. Foundation was founded by Brian Lamb in honor of his father, county commissioner Eugene Lamb, in 2003. Its purpose is to raise funds to develop and enhance Midway’s recreation center, also named after Eugene Lamb, Jr. It works to improve center facilities, land, staff, and the long-term civic impact of the center in the community.

Deloris Lamb serves as president. Freddie Franklin of Miracle Hills Nursing & Convalescent Center, Rolanda Lamb of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Vernell Ross, retired teacher and coach, and David Chapman, retired from Tallahassee Parks and Recreation also serve on the board.

At this time my husband and I would like to thank everyone at the Foundation for the prayers and monetary support that has been given us...each time I had a crisis in my family, my DOC family has been there for me.
