Miami Herald: Florida inmates refurbishing computers for kids
From the Miami Herald:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Inmates at two Florida prisons will be refurbishing donated computers for kids.
The computers will go to non-profits that serve children including schools, religious organizations and community programs.
Department of Corrections Secretary Edwin Buss said Thursday that kids will get free computers that otherwise might end up in a landfill.
Buss said the program also will help prisoners learn a useful trade at Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell and Cross City Correctional Institution.
The department ran a similar program from 1999 through 2006 that distributed 7,000 computers to child-centered organizations.
Florida’s nonprofit Corrections Foundation will be responsible for accepting the donation of computers that meet certain standards. It also will award the refurbished machines.
