Message from Secretary Tucker On Officer Ruben Thomas

Last night in an incident at Columbia Correctional Institution, 24-year-old Correctional Officer Sergeant Ruben Thomas was fatally injured after being stabbed by an inmate.  The tragic death of Sgt. Thomas, a six-year veteran of the Florida Department of Corrections, was a shock for all of us who have lost a dedicated member of our Corrections Family.   In speaking with Warden Don Davis and other staff this morning, it was clear that Sgt. Thomas was well respected by his fellow officers and the closely knit staff at Columbia CI.  Sgt. Thomas leaves behind a fiancé, an 18 month old daughter and was expecting a son in August.

His death and the wounding of Correctional Officer William Brewer by a convicted murderer serving a life sentence underscores the dangers our officers face every day on the job, and reminds us of the seriousness of our profession.

I speak for all of us in the Department when I say that we have suffered a tragic loss, and that we all mourn the death of this valiant officer whose name will be added to the growing list of Department of Corrections personnel who have lost their lives protecting the citizens of Florida. We pray for the speedy recovery of Officer Brewer and I send my personal condolences to Sgt. Thomas’ family and friends and his co-workers at Columbia Correctional Institution and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Ken Tucker
