Corrections Foundation Announces the Louie L. Wainwright Scholarship

Wainwright Scholarships, which will be awarded to one person in each institutional and community corrections region and central office.

The Corrections Foundation is proud to announce the Louie L. Wainwright Scholarship for 2022.

Each year, the Board of Directors will award a minimum of $1,000 and up to a maximum of $2,500 to an FDC employee who is attending an accredited public or private college or university or school, who is focusing on a criminal justice-centered program, and who intends on making the Florida Department of Corrections his or her career.

“The Louie L. Wainwright Scholarship presents an excellent educational opportunity to FDC employees and contractors,” said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky Dixon. “We thank the Corrections Foundation and Mr. Wainwright for investing in our staff. It is our hope that employees take advantage of this educational opportunity to further their personal and professional growth.”

“Mr. Wainwright places a large focus on professionalism, training, and education for all corrections professionals.  He has championed FDC employees and fought for them. We’re proud to honor his legacy by providing this scholarship,” said Jim Williams, a long-time Florida Department of Corrections volunteer and Corrections Foundation board member and who developed the concept for the scholarship.

Mr. Wainwright is the acknowledged Dean of American Correctional Administrators and served as Secretary for the Florida Department of Corrections for 25 years.

He received the American Correctional Association's highest tribute, the E.R. Cass Award for outstanding service. His efforts in support of accreditation in Florida and nationwide earned him the 1986 Accreditation Achievement Award from the Commission of Accreditation for Corrections.

Mr. Wainwright was appointed to the Corrections Foundation Board in 2001 and re-appointed as President for consecutive terms since.

The Louie L. Wainwright Scholarship is open for applications between January 1st and March 31st of each year. The board will determine the recipient by June 30th of each year.
